RPi3 - DS3231 Real Time Clock Module

Step 1

Type into the terminal, "sudo raspi-config" then arrow down to "Interface Options" and select "I2C" and turn it on, then exit out of Raspi-Config.

Type into terminal, "sudo reboot" to restart the RPi3.

Step 2

Type into the terminal, "sudo apt-get install i2c-tools"

Step 3

Type into terminal, "sudo i2cdetect -y 1" to check that your newly added RTC is recognized by the Pi. If you see the "68" your RTC is recognized by the Pi and is visible to the system.

Step 4

Type into the terminal, "sudo /boot/config.txt

Scroll to the bottom of the page and add:

# Real Time Clock
dtoverlay=i2c-rtc,ds3231

Hold down the CTRL key and press X, save the file with the default name of /boot/config.txt

Step 5

Type into the terminal, "sudo reboot" to restart the Pi
